New features added in version 1.1:
Gallery Maker Pro is the fastest and easiest way to create linked picture galleries. No more hassling with HTML tables and page links, just create your pictures and thumbnails, and let Gallery Maker Pro do the rest!
What is a Linked Picture Gallery?
Let’s say you want to create a gallery with 100 pictures. You want to create each page with 20 pictures (4 across and 5 down), and you want each of the 5 pages linked to each other. NO PROBLEM! With gallery Maker Pro, it only takes about 5 minutes!
Click here to see our example.Does Gallery Maker Pro create thumbnail images?
YES! Now, with version 1.1, GMP, will create your thumbnail images and size them as big or as small as you want. GMP will automatically resize the image to a standard thumbnail size you specify, without distorting or stretching the image. Thumbnail images created are usually about 3 to 5K.
How does Gallery Maker Pro link my thumbnail images to the pictures?
To use GMP, your thumbnail images must have the same name as your full size pictures, They must also be in a different directory. It is best to put the thumbnail images in a subfolder of the full size pictures. The subfolder should be named "thumbnails". GMP will default to that directory.
Does Gallery Maker Pro use tables?
Yes. You can select how GMP creates the page. All pictures can be created in one big table, or you can create each row as an individual table. After the pages are created, you can insert advertising between them with your favorite HTML editor.
How big should the thumbnail images be?
You can make them as big or small as you like. GMP allows you to set the table cell size, and create the images to fix. If you already have thumbnail images, they should be no larger than the cell size. If the images are smaller, GMP automatically centers them in the cell.
Can I add a logo or text to the top of each page?
YES! Gallery Maker PRO allows you to insert HTML code at the top and bottom of each page. You can insert pictures, sounds or text quick and easily. Don’t know HTML? That’s OK, just create the top of the page in your favorite HTML editor, then copy and paste the code into Gallery Maker PRO.
Can I set the background and text colors?
YES! GMP gives lets you select background color, text color, link color and visited link color all with a nice push button interface. You can even specify a background image.
YES! Once you have created and tested your gallery, you can save the definition. Each definition is saved in a file, so there is no limit to the number of definitions you can create.
Gallery Maker Pro was designed to create picture galleries from files on your hard drive. If you are like most webmasters, you will keep a copy of your site on a computer to make and test your changes before promoting to your the web server.
GMP will need the location of the picture files on your hard drive, as well as where they will eventually be placed on the server. If your directory structure on the hard drive is the same as the web server, you can create and test GMP pages without uploading to the web server first. Microsoft IE3 and IE4 work best for this kind of testing.
The following Tutorial assumes you have 50 pictures and a web server. You can use more or less, but this is all you need to use GMP to create great looking picture galleries.
First, a little about web paths, and domain names. A web path informs the browser where to find files on the web server. There are always 2 parts to a web path. The domain name and the directory path. http://www.maxcam.com is an example of a domain name. /gmp/index.html is an example of a directory web path. Put together, they will load the page index.html from the web directory /gmp on the web server domain www.maxcam.com.
When building a web page with pictures, the web path to the picture should NOT include the domain. The pictures should be referenced from the "root" of you web server. For example... To load a picture from web path "http://www.maxcam.com/gmp/pic01.jpg", the picture should be referenced from the root of the domain. "/gmp/pic01.jpg" The pictures will load much faster when referenced from the root.
It is important to understand the concept of a web path because Gallery Maker Pro needs you to specify the web path to load a background image, link the gallery pages together, and load the thumbnail and full size pictures.
This tutorial will take you through each field and option of the program. In the process we will build some gallery pages from a directory of pictures.
First, create a directory called "C:\gmpsample", and copy your pictures there. We will build our gallery pages in this directory as well.
Start Gallery Maker Pro. If you do not have a registered copy, click the OK on the days left screen, and cancel on the register screen. This will bring you to the first tab of GMP
The first step is to select the path to the full size pictures. to do this, click to button at the end of the field. Locate the directory "c:\gmpsample", and select the first picture in the directory. Click OK. The path c:\gmpsample\ is returned to the field.
Selecting the picture destination web path.
Next, we need to tell GMP where the images will be on the web server when the page is loaded. This is called the destination web path. It should be specified from the root of you web server. For our example, we will use "/gmpsamples/". you can type this into the field, or double click the field to copy and covert the path above. (try it, you’ll see)
Selecting the thumbnail directory.
If you already have thumbnail images, GMP expects them to be the same names as the larger images, and in a separate directory. For this example, we are going to assume you are using GMP to create your thumbnail images. (it’s much easier)
The program defaults this directory to Picture directory + "thumbnails\". So the thumbnail directory has defaulted to "C:\gmpsample\thumbnail". we will leave this and go to the next field. GMP will create the thumbnail images in this directory.
Selecting the thumbnail destination web path.
This directory has also defaulted to the Picture Web Path + "/thumbnails/". This reference will be used to display the thumbnail images on the gallery pages. If the images don’t appear during test, this is probably the wrong path.
Creating the thumbnail images.
Check this box to have GMP create the thumbnail images. On the next TAB, we will specify the thumbnail size and matrix layout.
Type "sample" in this box. GMP will create 1 or more gallery pages from the pictures. Each page will begin with this prefix, have a page number, and end with ".htm". the pages created in this example will be "sample1.htm", "sample2.htm"... etc.
GMP will create the gallery pages in this directory. Type "c:\gmpsample\"
This path is used to link the multiple pages together. Type "/gmpsample/". If the navigation from page to page does not work, this path is probably wrong.
The first field on the Page Properties tab is Page title. This is the title that displays at the top of the web page when it is loaded in a browser. type "GMP Sample Pages"
If you want to use a background image, this is where you specify a web path to the image. for this example we will leave it blank and use the page color properties instead.
You can change the color of the page background, text color, link and visited link color. for now we will leave the defaults.
Thumbnail size, layout and color.
the first 2 field the number if thumbnail image across and down on the gallery pages. we can leave the defaults for now. You can change them latter to experiment.
The height and width are used to scale the images during the creation of the thumbnail images. 150 x 150 will create a 3-5K thumbnail image.
The border with option will set the size of the border around the table. Type a "6" is this field.
For this example we will leave the default settings on rest this page.
This page will allow you to place the page links at the top of the page, bottom of the page... or both. You can also place horizontal line between the page links and the pictures. experiment with this section to get the look you desire.
The back button graphic web path is the path to a back button image file. The link is the web path to send the browser when the button is clicked. for this example, we will leave it blank.
These sections allow you to specify HTML code for the top and bottom of the pages.
In the header, type the following code.
<center>
<H1>My GMP Sample Page</H1>
</center>
in the footer type:
<center>
<H3>The End.</H3>
</center>
Click the build pages button. You should get a message at the bottom of the application telling you how many pages where created. To test the pages, go to the c:\gmpsample directory, and look for the sample1.htm page. Double click it to load pages. (SOME VERSIONS OF NETSCAPE WILL NOT BE ABLE TO TEST FROM THE C: DRIVE. YOU WILL NEED TO LOAD THE PAGES AND PICTURES TO YOUR WEB SERVER TO TEST... THAT’S WHY I USE MSIE4)
